One of the core doctrines that separates historic/Biblical Christianity from other forms of Christianity is the issue of authority. Does a “church” institution have authority over Scripture? Is the authority of a “church” institution equal to that of Scriptural authority?
The answer from 2 Timothy 3:16-17 is clear… Scripture is directly from God and therefore has authority over the Church. When individuals and institutions say that they alone can interpret Scripture or that only they understand the Bible, then we know they are going beyond their authority.
Likewise, there are times when we think our own opinions and thoughts are better than others. While the Bible has authority over the Church, the reality is that the Church also has authority over us. We are to be subject to the authority of elders and their leadership- within the bounds of Scripture (as the ultimate authority).
Properly understanding this doctrine is essential to our Christian walk, and it can keep us from so many heresies.
This hoodie summarizes this doctrine into a simple graphic. When it comes to authority, the Bible is greater than the Church which is greater than us as individuals.
